6 Tips To Quickly Clean Your Window Blinds

Window blinds are a common sight around the home. They serve a great purpose but can also be frustrating and time consuming to keep clean. Here are 6 quick tips to keep your window blinds clean and debris free.

Dust frequently

Use a soft cloth or a feather duster to gently wipe dust off the blinds. You should aim to dust your window blinds at least once every week. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove any loose dirt or dust from the blinds. This is especially effective for removing pet hair or larger debris.

Use a microfiber cloth

Microfiber cloths are great because you can clean both sides of the blinds at the same time, and the microfiber material is gentle on the blinds while also being effective in removing dirt and grime. Close the blinds and gently wipe the slats with the microfiber cloth from one end to the other. Turn the blinds to the opposite direction and repeat the process. If the blinds are still dirty, dampen the microfiber cloth or sock with water or a cleaning solution, and repeat the wiping process. You can finish wiping with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any remaining dust or debris.

Make a natural cleaning solution

Mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle. To increase the strength of the solution, add more vinegar. You can also add a few drops of dish soap to act as a degreaser. Spray this solution on your microfiber cloth and wipe each blind being sure to cover both sides of the slats. This homemade cleaning solution is cheap, effective, and easy to make.

Soak your blinds in the bathtub

To deep clean super dirty window blinds, remove and soak them in a bathtub filled with warm water and Dawn dish soap for at least 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water and hang them outside to dry.

Use cotton socks

If you have a pair of old cotton socks lying around the house, simply wear one of the socks on your hand. Dip it into a soapy solution, and grasp each blind and wipe clean. This method is great because you can grasp each slat securely with your hand. Sometimes microfiber cloths can move around when you’re wiping window blinds, so using a sock on your hand will keep it nice and secure.

Clean from top to bottom

For horizontal blinds: Start at the top most slat and work your way down. This will prevent having to go back and re-clean slats. If you start from the bottom and work your way up, you will knock dust and dirt onto the already cleaned slats.

For vertical blinds: Start at one side and work your way down. Use your sock or microfiber cloth to firmly grasp each blind and wipe clean. Starting from left and working to the right (or vice versa) will help you stay on track about which blinds you have already cleaned

Remember to always check the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning your blinds, as some materials may require specific cleaning methods. Regular cleaning is key to preventing buildup on your window blinds. Try to dust them at least once a week, and do a more thorough cleaning every few months to keep them looking their best.
